Active participation in recreational and competitive sports is increasing day by day due to the increasing popularity of physical activity and interest in sports as a career option. The number of individuals participating in competitive, recreational and adventure sports is also rising steadily making India a sporting nation. The capacity of sports persons to train, sustain and excel in the field depends on appropriate nutritional, physical, physiological and psychological strategies, all implemented harmoniously. Sports nutrition is specific to the type of sport, season, timing and age of sports person, and completely different from nutritional principles applicable for non-sports persons and/or other groups of population. However, faulty nutritional, hydration and exercise practices, food fads, and excessive intake of supplements are prevalent among sports persons as well as physically active people that could be detrimental to their health and performance. Hence, there is an urgent need to disseminate correct scientific information to athletes and physically active persons through a forum of experts
from allied fields, and facilitate their optimal and
successful performance.
